Abstract. The article considers the artistic specificity of the cycle of stories by E.N. Uspensky about the crocodile Gena and Cheburashka. The specificity of the transmission of children's interaction with toys and the world as a whole, conveyed in the first work of the cycle, is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the strengthening of satirical elements in the 90s of the twentieth century, leading to the fact that new stories are focused more on an adult audience ("Business of Crocodile Gena", "The Abduction of Cheburashka"). It is argued that on the plot and compositional level, the end of the cycle is the story "Cheburashka Goes to the People", in which in 1998 Eduard Uspensky returns to the language and style available to primary schoolchildren. Three years later, in the collection of stories "Visiting Cheburashka", the writer adapts the content of the cycle for a preschool audience, making it understandable for a modern child. The stories written in the last years of the author's life show Cheburashka and Gena exclusively in a postmodern way, as images that are an integral part of modern culture. For the first time, stories about these characters are considered from the standpoint of literary analysis as an integral artistic cycle.
